The Business Book Club: Vol. 1

I absolutely love reading. Always have. And I'm not to picky when it comes to reading material. I just love a good book. Recently I took over my Hubby's Kindle Fire and joined the Kindle Unlimited program.

Pure book heaven.

I am always looking for books that will help me improve myself and my business. I'm a little bit of a junkie when it comes to anything that helps my business grow, become more efficient and helps get me to the next level. I'm always taking classes, downloading e-books and looking for articles to read. My Kindle is full of business books waiting for me to read. I do a lot of jumping from one to another.

Which lead me to the idea of starting a little Business Book Club where we can talk about the books we love and hate and share with one another!

I had heard of a book that was getting a lot of fanfare a while back called, Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative by Austin Kleon. And I had actually pulled it up on Amazon a few times and contemplated buying it. But I just kept coming back to the thought that I'm not an artist and I'm really not a creative type. So I never downloaded it.

But then my bloggy BFF Kelly read it and said that I needed to read it because it was seriously good stuff. Now Kelly is always telling me that I am a creative - just not in the conventional way. And  I always assure her that she's sweet, but I'm not creative. Because honestly, I don't feel like I am. It's an ongoing debate. So, when I found myself with some extra time on my hands and looking for a good, motivational read, I remembered her recommendation and bought it on a whim.

And then proceeded to read it in an hour.

Because, one, it is a short and easy read. But two, it really is good stuff.

One of the first things that caught my eye in the book that I really loved was this quote:

This book changed my perception of what being creative is. In the past I thought to be creative you had to be a writer, or an artist or an actor or dancer. But the truth is... I am creative. In the way I run my business, how I structure my workshops and the community I build. And now that I can see myself in this light, I'm motivated to be more creative in all my pursuits.

The highlights of the book for me:

  • Creativity is not magic. Creativity is for everyone.
  • Do the work you want to see done.
  • Do good work and then put it where people can see it.

So, why is the book called Steal Like an Artist? Well, in a nutshell, nothing is original. Yep, you got it. Nothing. The writer Jonathan Lethem said, "when people call something original, nine times out of ten times they just don't know the references or the original sources involved." So, basically, let the awesome things that inspire you, influence your work.

It's not about copying. It's about letting the good stuff you love influence you and push you to put out amazing stuff. Kleon gives you 10 ways to do that in his book. And I'm ready to start doing every one starting today.

Do I recommend this book? Most definitely. I'm ready to go back and read through it again so I can pick up on anything I missed the first time. I truly believe that this is one you keep in your arsenal and go back to time and time again.

Looking for suggestions Wonderlanders! Tell me, what are you favorite business books?

First Annual NE TX Women in Business Conference - Coming Soon

So, at the end of 2014 I had this thought hit me. You know, one of those that comes out of nowhere but you can't stop thinking about it. But it just seems to crazy to possibly do but it just keeps nagging you at the edge of your brain where you've tried to push it.

Yeah, so I had one of those thoughts.

You see, I live in a small town. And I love my community. I've grown up watching my Dad give back to our community time and time again over the years. I've seen the importance that one persons contribution can make. I wanted to do something that would bring people to our town to spend their time and money and highlight all the great things we have to offer. And the light bulb went off.

I could do an all day conference or event for women in business in our Northeast Texas area. I could combine my passion for small business and teaching/learning with a group I love - women in business - and create an event in my hometown like no other in the area. Mind you, I've never planned or produced an event this large. I have no money for such task. And I have no clue if people will come. Like I said, crazy idea.

So, I decided to pitch my idea to Tim, my SBDC guy. I call him my SBDC guy because we've been working together for a little over a year now. I do social media workshops for them and some volunteer counseling for clients who need to build a social media marketing strategy. I knew if I could have his backing, I might have a chance of my dream becoming a reality. I think I started the conversation with something like, 'So Tim, I have this really crazy idea I want to throw at you.'

The crazy thing is, he didn't think it was crazy! He actually thought it was a great idea and I should do it! He promised me the support and help of the SBDC office and so my dream of an all day women in business event was born. And the event is scheduled for June!

The process of planning an event like this is definitely as learn as you go process. The first thing I did was build a committee of people that are completely awesome that I knew would see my vision and bring it to life. There are so many moving parts to an event like this and I feel a lot like a juggler! But we have a solid plan together and are working on getting it executed. I am working on nailing down a keynote speaker - an author and motivational speaker on success for women.

I write this not to just tell you about this cray awesome event that is coming to NE Texas, but more so to say no idea or dream is too crazy to happen. I love the quote, 'if your dreams don't scare you, they aren't big enough.' I never thought when I first jotted this idea on my whiteboard that it would actually be happening this year. But it is.

So, dream big Wonderlanders! Dream big!

5 Things I've Learned - Vol. 1

I just love those moments when an idea hits you out of nowhere - and it's an idea you love. That's what happened to me Saturday morning about 2 a.m. as I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, with insomnia, listening to the Hubby snore. Usually ideas for the blog come to me just like this. It's whatever is on my mind or heart that day and the light bulb goes off and I'm like, 'hey, I should write about that.' I will not blog to simply just have something on this page each week. It's important to me what I choose to write about and put out here in the world wide web for you Wonderlanders.

So, here's a confession: I'm a tad bit OCD and might just be a chronic worrier. This makes my brain stay on overdrive at all times. It's almost like a ticker tape goes through my head all my waking hours for me to try to keep up with. There's always bits and pieces there that I grab onto and think, 'I need to blog about that' and in an instant it's gone. Or maybe it's just a thought that doesn't garner a full blog post, but it's important to me.

So, with all that being said, '5 Things I've Learned' is the result of all that madness from above. This is going to be my go to 'brain dump' post where I can share with you guys stuff. What kind of stuff you ask? Well, just whatever stuff is on my mind - maybe life stuff or social media stuff or a skill I've acquired. But in a nutshell, just stuff I've learned.

So, here we go.

1. High School is Hard: I'm sure high school was hard when I was there (a long, long time ago according to my kids) but to see it through the eyes of your kiddos is a totally different experience. These kids have more access to everything and know more at 13 than I probably did at 20. To say it's hard, I'm talking about jealousy, the need to fit in, having friends, being bullied, being scared to be who you truly are for fear of judgment. I'm not kidding myself here, I know the real world is the same way. But in high school, I don't feel, you are as emotionally equipped to deal with it all (Lord knows my kids aren't). And as a mother, you just want to fix things. You tell them everything will be okay, but you know as a parent that isn't always the truth. There will be tough and hard lessons along the way and all you can do is pray that it adds (in a positive way) to their foundation of preparing to become an adult.

2. I am My Mother: I could honestly dedicate an entire post to this, but I won't (because you probably don't want to read an entire post with me whining about how I'm my mother). I always said growing up that I would never be anything like her (oh naive child). But now that I'm a mother I see that I am, in fact, exactly like her. And I try to embrace that. My Mom did one hell of a job making sure I turned out to be the kick ass adult I am today (that's okay to say, right).

3. There Will Never Be Enough: Enough money. Enough time. Enough love to go around. Enough hours in the day. So instead of worrying about it, we have to be thankful for and appreciate what we do have. And stop wishing our life away.

4. Don't Fall Victim to Blogging 'Rules': In my humble opinion, when it comes to blogging you need to do what you do. Roll how you roll. Do you and do it with greatness. Forget what everyone is telling you that you should be doing in order to be successful (you read my success post, right). Be authentic and the right people will come and stay and then tell their awesome friends to come too and then you will have a whole awesome community built. I'm so sick and tired of the 'blog experts' telling me to find a niche and not share to much and not offend anyone and all that jazz. But hey, I've always been a rule breaker. You should be too (at least when it comes to blogging).

5. Don't Be Afraid to Put Yourself Out There: True story - you never know if you don't ask. Be confident and ask for what you want. You never know what kind of awesomeness might come from simply taking a small risk. Seriously Wonderlanders - apply for that dream job; ask your boss for a raise; reach out to someone you want to be a mentor; type that email you've been scared to type and hit send. If you don't put yourself out there, you will never know. And the old adage is true, it's better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all!

So, give them to me! One, two or five... what have you learned lately? I would love to hear!
